Clothing for Rock Fishing

The Correct Clothing is Essential

Wondering what you should wear while rock fishing in Australia may seem a little silly at first, but there are a few of things to consider here; the temperature and weather conditions, freedom to move around without restraint from your clothing, and most importantly, your safety.

Weather conditions can be pleasant, very hot or very cold. Too much clothing can bog you down and prevent you from casting well, reeling in a fish or move quickly when you need to. And rock fishing can be very dangerous because of the wet, slippery rocks so you need to have the appropriate shoes and attire.

Wear Safe Footwear

The slipperiness and power of the water makes rock fishing very dangerous. One slip on a rock and you could fall into the sea and be swept out. If you were knocked unconscious in the process, you may have no chance to recover, so wear the appropriate rock fishing footwear.

On Sandstone:

The rocks are slippery and sharp so wear steel cleats or attach rock plates to your shoes. Don’t wear plastic shoes because they may break apart if you have to make a quick move. Wear light leather or canvas lace up shoes which can be removed quickly if need be.

On Granite or Basalt:

Do not wear rock plates on granite or basalt. Wear plastic sandals with tentacle style sucker pads and fast release straps.

Normal Weather Clothing

In normal conditions your clothing should be warm, light and water resistant. You should be able to take it off quickly in an emergency. Don’t wear trousers as they can get hung up in the rocks. Wear comfortable loose shorts, instead. If you must wear trousers to keep you warm, make sure they are made of light nylon and have an elastic waistband so you can remove them quickly.

Cold Weather Clothing

When the weather is cold, insulate your feet by wearing an extra pair of socks, a pair of warm but light trousers, as many as two pullover sweatshirts and a waterproof jacket with a hood.

When you go rock fishing, you want to be concentrating on the sport. You can’t do that if you are miserable because you are cold, so dress warmly.
